About

Pastel Artists of Hawaii (PAH) is an educational, public and member supported, non-profit 501(c)3 organization, established in 2001 to primarily promote awareness of soft pastel as a serious art medium, and secondarily, to develop and maintain a national society standing. To reach these goals, we sponsor an annual open-juried exhibition each year, in which an invited, experienced artist juries, presents awards and teaches an educational workshop. PAH is also a member of the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS).

Background

Helen C. Iaea

The history of PAH began when a well-known local pastel/watercolor artist, Helen C. Iaea longed for a society that was dedicated to promoting pastels as a serious art medium in Hawaii. Encouraged and supported by many of her students, especially Fong Ling and Anna Noriak, she completed the difficult work of organizing the society in 2001, and thus became it’s first president.

PAH periodically sponsors seminars and local workshops, such as those given by Pastel Society of America members Maggie Price, Richard McKinleyDesmond O’Hagan, Jason Chang, Colette Odya Smith, Sally Strand, Terry Ludwig and Mark Norseth, a Hawaii resident. All this requires funding and in this regard, we encourage membership and accept donations.

PAH’s annual juried exhibition is open to all, members and non-members alike, with only a small fee-based difference. Awards are given for the best works not only to reward, but also to encourage artists to do their best.
